Papaya Season

The season of papaya
Teaches the geometry of fruit
Cut and uncut.

The freshness, juiciness, opening to colour -
They are an addition to the vibrancy of life.

Equally,
There is the movement so clear
In the fruit and vegetable world:
The movement to rot.

Time is an amazing sculptor.

Beauty,
Ugliness,
They depend on the moment
that you choose to look -
Can you remember when you had not learnt
such distinctions?

Caroline Lewis received a doctorate in physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. She is passionate about including a sense of nature in her writing. She lives in Toronto, Canada.
